Home Style Vegetarian Dinner Set- Mikoan Restaurant in Kyoto

For dinner after our light yudofu hot pot meal, we headed to town to find Mikoan (a home style restaurant that seats less than 10 people each time).

It was located in a tiny alley beside a huge bookshop along Fuji Daimaru side entrance.

The restaurant was so cramped and packed with so many items. There were hardly any space for us to walk around freely. It felt like someone’s home which had not been cleaned for ages!

We ordered the Vegetarian dinner set with side dishes 1000 yen ($13.30) and the curry set 800 yen ($10.60).

We both thought the vegetarian set with side dishes was the best! Everything in the set was super delicious. The tofu was really soft and well marinated. The curry on the other hand was so huge we had a tough time finishing it.

Our favourite side dish were the soy fried meat fritters and we ordered an extra portion 400 yen ($5.30) to share. Although the food was great the ambience was quite dirty. Hubby Ro told me he spotted some cockroaches along the way. We did not get any tummy aches after this meal but we wished it was cleaner!

Mikoan (Home style restaurant)

570 Nakano-cho, Teramachi-dori (600-8032) (at Shijo Teramachi, Shijo-saguru)

Hidden down an alleyway, 10 seats on stools

Set menu 850 yen for lunch and 1000 yen for dinner or vegetable curry for 800 yen

Cooked on the spot.

From Shijo dori in downtown kyoto head south onto Teramachi dori and look out for family mart shop and the bookshop just past that. Look for the red awning and a sign in English by a small alley and head there.

From Kawaramachi or Shijo Teramachi, go west, then turn south on Teramachi, past Fujii Daimuru department store on your right, past the AM/PM convenience store and Nobunaga book store; almost immediately next to the bookstore (also on your right) you will find a long, narrow, alley-like entrance, with Mikoan at the very end.

Open 5-11pm weekdays and 12 pm on weekends
