Vegan Fine Dining- Candle 79, New York City

Earlier in May, we went to New York City (we proclaim it the land for Vegans) and had a blast! There are tonnes of restaurants and cafe around NYC that provides vegan or vegetarian options and they have one of the highest number of vegan fine dining joints around town. Each of them are so unique and special, we were not able to try them all but had the chance to visit a few which blew our minds away! The first night, we made a last minute reservation at Candle 79 (their reviews on tripadvisor is crazy good) and we had only slots for 9pm. Despite the heavy downpour, we made our way there and got settled into our seats. We ordered a couple of items from the dinner menu and shared them among four of us. The bill came up to a total of USD 250+ including tips (20% on top of your bill) which was definitely not the cheapest thing in town. The ambience of the restaurant was chic, simple and sadly the lighting was so bad our food pictures did not turn out looking so great. Prices listed here are in USD.

Guacamole Timbale

poblano-guacamole, chipotle black beans, jicama-cucumber salsa, plantain chips, ranchero sauce 16

Spinach Ravioli (Really love the combination)

cashew cheese, fall vegetables, sauteed brocoli rabe, cashew parmesan, truffled tomato sauce 18

Vegetable Nori Rolls

pickled ginger, avocado wasabi, chipotle aioli, tamari-ginger sauce 14

Grilled Kale Salad (Another must try!)

string beans, beluga lentils, red onions, kabocha squash, avocado, sunflower seeds, spelt berries, chive dressing 16 and we added tempeh 4

Seitan Piccata (this is a must try!)

creamed spinach, grilled potato cake, oyster mushroom, lemon caper suace 23

Wild mushroom crepe

fall vegetables, sauteed wild mushrooms, poblano peppers, spinach, garlic truffle aioli, beet-arugula-fennel salad 23

The most disappointing dish that evening was Chef’s daily hand cut pasta 23. It tasted really bland and was a far cry in terms of texture, flavour and presentation as compared to the rest we ordered.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Bliss (Must try!!!)

chocolate & peanut butter mousse, salted peanut-caramel crust, berry coulis 13

chocolate chip vanilla cream filling, coconut ice cream, chocolate drizzle 14

Candle 79 remains to serve one of the best vegan desserts we have ever tried and if we are ever back in NYC, we are going there on the first day again.
