Homegrown Soy Wax Melts- Artisan’s Garden

Another homegrown brand I spotted which was vegan and smells so good from far was Artisan’s Garden Soy Wax Melts! Even before I could reach the booth, I could already smell the soft and gentle waves of aroma. When I came closer, I was even more mesmerized by the wide variety and beautiful scents. I am a huge fan of making sure my home smells good and fresh and have never come across a brand as good as this. I have bought a couple of soy candles around the world and on iherb but Artisan’s Garden choices are really rich in flavours. Most scented candles I purchased tend to always have a lighter tone but this product still smells as good and almost everyone who have been to our home have commented our home smells amazing. Here are some questions I asked Susan and here are her replies:

When did you start Artisan’s Garden?

I started it just before Christmas in 2013 when I initially experimented with handcrafted soaps, bath salts, balms, candle tins and wax melts as Christmas gifts to friends and family.

That sparked my interest in natural bath and body products after I left the corporate left after 20 years in the F&B sector. I took a short course in soap making and started developing an interest in soapcraft. I went on to take comprehensive courses in both soap and candle crafting in Seoul, Korea and Sydney.

Whilst in the US and Australia, I was introduced to the concept of wax melts and thought it was an ideal way of scenting a room without getting my burners all oily and burnt from burning essential oils. As I only wanted to deal with natural soy wax, I started developing different scents, initially for my own use- hence the birth of Artisan’s Garden Soy Wax Melts.

What are some of the challenges you faced?

Any candle maker will tell you that it takes a lot of trial and experimentations to get the right balance of the scent colour and burn. So at any one time, Artisan’s Garden would have no less than 16 different scents, with new ones being tried all the time.

What are your most popular scents?

Our most popular sellers are White Tea & Ginger, Ocean Breeze and Himalayan Bamboo.

When will you be having new scents?

I do them seasonally and this coming Christmas, I will be launching three new scents- Christmas Cedar (a woody homey scent), Home for the Holidays (a party mix of citrus, florals and woods) and Candy Cane (a pure peppermint).

Where are your soy wax from?

Artisan’s Garden uses only the best soy wax from the USA:

  • 100& vegetable, made with Pure Soybean Oil, GUARANTEED
  • All NATURAL and biodegradable
  • Manufactured meeting FDA standards
  • Kosher Certified
  • NOT tested on animals
  • Contains NO animal products
  • Contains NO palm wax
  • Contains No petroleum, paraffin or beeswax products
  • Contains NO pesticides and NO herbicides
  • Contains NO GeneticallyModified Materials
  • Considered GRAS under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act

What are wax melts?

The melting of scented wax chips is still relatively a new concept in Singapore, compared to water-diluted essential oil. While wax melts are also placed in a tea-light or electric burner, the advantages are substantial.

  • Wax does not evaporate, unlike water, thus no worry about drying up
  • The scent throw of wax melts is wider and more effective than candles
  • Melting wax gives you the scent much quicker than lighting a scented candle

How to use wax melts?

  • Place 8-12 pieces of wax melts on burner and light tea light
  • After the scent has dissipated, pour the liquid wax away (recommended into a paper cup- never pour down the sink)
  • Wipe burner with tissue paper on napkin and place new wax melts to burn again

Tips on using the burner:

  • Place burner on a stable and safe surface (eg. not on a wood laminate or paper surface as the base might get hot)
  • choose a burner that is not too open or too high at the base, as the heat from the flame needs to melt the wax, neither should it be too low that the heat makes the entire burner too hot to handle

Why should one use soy wax:

For most of us in Singapore, we have a tendency to be enclosed in an airconditioned room- be it at home or at work. Soy wax is:

  • Unlike the more common paraffin wax, soy wax is natural and non-toxic. With no petrol-carbon soot, it burns cleaner and is therefore safer to use in the home.
  • Soy wax melts at a lower temperature, so it does not scald in the event of a spill, making it safer around children
  • It is so easy to clean- just give your burner a wipe or simple use water and soap! No scraping needed.
  • Soy wax is naturally biodegradable
  • It is common for soy wax candles and tea lights to last 30%-50% longer than paraffin ones, thus giving you a much longer burn time

They also sell lemongrass lizard repellent S$10 a bottle which is all natural and does not harm the wiggly insects but yet wards them away. I thought it is such a brilliant and green idea!

Homegrown Vegan Lip Balms & Body Balms- Balm Kitchen

I was at Public Garden Flea Market a few weeks back and was surprised to chance upon a homegrown vegan lip balm brand by Teresa Foo from Balm Kitchen. Though this brand is very new, it has garnered many attention at the market. I spotted many ladies shopping and trying Teresa’s products. When I came closer, I realized why everyone was smitten. Firstly, her logo looks amazing and when I found out she hand drew it, my jaws dropped. Next, her product speaks volume with the smooth texture and creative scents she came up with herself. I particularly love the dark chocolate and green tea versions. I decided to check in with Teresa after the flea market with a short Q&A. She gamely accepted the questions and replied promptly.

IMG_3167 IMG_3166

1. When did you start Balm Kitchen?

Balm Kitchen went official in July 2014.

2. What was the first product you produced?

I started making lip balms to replace the ones I’ve used up. I have chapped lips and occasional cold sores and needed a good (all natural, plant base and vegan too) and effective lip balm to maintain healthy lips.

3. Is there a secret ingredient you must share about your product?

No secret ingredient at all. I believe in creating honest and reliable products that my customers can trust. Everything is listed under the ingredients list on the product labels.

4. How do you get inspirations for new flavours?

Ah. As for my lip balms, it has to be from the food we consume. The natural aroma is just wonderful and they are not supposed to linger for too long because their oils are very volatile. Most of my ingredients (except Mica-lip safe!) are edible ingredients. I love my teas (that’s why you see there are more tea inspired flavours in my lip balms and one more flavour out soon!). We seek comfort in our food and therefore I feel that naturally I should make lip balm flavours using our favourite ingredients i.e. chocolate, coffee, vanilla, etc.

For my body balms, I feel there are certain times of the day that we can use essential oils to adjust our moods. Therefore my body balms are categorised according to Uplifting- Orange and Vanilla (when you wake up or need to liven up your spirits), Balancing- Geranium and Rose (middle of the day or just need some beautiful flowery aroma) and Relaxing- Jasmine and Lavender (wind down after a day or to de-stress). The Au Natural body balm is unscented but has the natural aroma from the cocoa butter.

5, Where are you hoping to retail in the next 3 years?

I will continue to improve my products and I hope to extend my existing balms to an entire range of skincare. Currently, I am studying Holistic Cosmetology specialising in organic skincare and I want to eventually have my own shop space where I can retail my products, create bespoke skincare and also conduct workshops. I want to share my knowledge with everyone so that they can benefit from using all natural skincare.

6. Who would you love to see using your products?

Everyone and anyone who has lips and skin!LOL! I want to continue to educate everyone about using natural lip balms and body balms as our ski is the largest organ and whatever we put on the skin is as good as we are consuming it.

7. Is there a special tip to using your products which most people do not know?

Oh yes. My lip balms and body balms are multi-purpose balms besides using them on the lips and body.

  • emergency face balm when your facial skin feels dry and tight
  • as a cuticle cream
  • as a baby bottom barrier to prevent nappy rash
  • on your cracked and dry heels (exfoliation before applying balm is highly recommended)
  • blister balm on your feet to reduce abrasions from shoes
  • lubricant for your door hinges!!! (Just kidding with this last point! Maybe it works! LOL)

8.Can you layer lip balms?

Yes you can totally layer lip balms especially with Balm Kitchen lip balms. Ingredients such as castor oil and candelilla wax act as a barrier to prevent moisture loss (transepidermal water loss, TEWL) through our lips where the skin is quite thin. You can apply the lip balms when you go to bed at night and keep your lips well protected especially if you are sleeping in the air-conditioned room which is very dehydrating the lips and skin too.

9. Any misconceptions about your products you wish to clarify?

My products are made with all natural, plant based vegan ingredients and many may confused that natural would mean organic. Currently the only organic ingredients in my balms is the coconut oil. Although they are not all organic, I give the assurance to my customers that I only curate the highest quality ingredients for my balms. I am already working towards creating an all organic products in the near future as I write.

10. Will you always be doing vegan friendly products or only for your current range?

Yes and will continue for all future products i.e. no honey, beeswax and diary. I want everyone to be able to use my products. My goal is to have my products verified vegan and bunny approved and working towards it!

Currently, Teresa is participating in the Organic October/Make the switch event organised by Saferskin. She will give a $1 discount on all lip balms/shimmer lip balms and/or body balms when customers bring in their current lip products i.e. lip balm, lip gloss and/or body lotions, creams, etc, to her pop up store which she will post the details on her website, Facebook and Instagram. Offer is limited to one lip balm/shimmer lip balm and one body balm per customer. There is also FREE local shipping for all online purchases during this month long event. P/S: Teresa also shared that the shelf life of her products are good for a year as there is no water in the product hence there is lesser chance of them going bad.

I look forward to more creations from Teresa and I am pinching with joy that more homegrown labels like hers will be sold around the world! Support Local, Go Local and Try Local:)

Vegan Cuts Subscription Box from USA

Screen shot 2013-12-05 at AM 10.23.57 IMG_3329

I was going through my saved drafts and realized I missed this overdue post! Last year, we received a lovely parcel from Vegan Cuts from USA! They have one of the coolest vegan snack subscription in the world. Each subscription cost US$19.95 and everything in the box is a surprise, some items are not even out in stores yet. Each box contains 7-10 vegan goodies to your doorstep. They offer free shipping in US and finally they are also shipping internationally at an additional US$15! We got a bundle of them and we enjoyed all the different flavours and goodies they have. Each item is uniquely different and you will get a wide range of sweet, sour, crunchy to savoury treats to munch on. We loved the snapea crisps the most (hint* they are sold on iherb) though we are usually not huge fans of peas but this snack has the right amount of salt, flavour and crunch. A few close friends of ours saw our mystery box and wanted to try some snacks. We gave it to them and guess what, they are now subscribing to Vegancuts!

The other box they offer is the vegan beauty box where you will get a monthly surprise of new and award-winning vegan skincare, beauty and nail products which are hard to find in Singapore. If we have a choice, a Vegan Cuts box a week will be perfect! This box will be a great gift idea for this upcoming holiday season to family and friends who have always had doubts about vegan food.  Their website has also recently expanded to include e-books downloads to vegan fashion finds. We would like to thank the team at Vegancuts for this opportunity to try their products and we looking forward to more vegan inventions from them.

A Pampering Vegan Nail Polish Session at Auum Nail Spa- Turf City

IMG_7331 IMG_7332

Zi, the owner of Auum nail spa invited me over to her cozy shop a couple of weeks back and boy was I impressed with the range of products and service I got. Not forgetting the cozy vintage big armchairs which reminded me of the shops along portobello market in London.

IMG_7335 IMG_7338

I took awhile to soak in the shop ambience and thought the washing sinks were super retro and clever!

IMG_7341 IMG_7347

This vegan-friendly beauty spot abides by strict sanitary practices and offers only paraben-free and acetone-free services, so they are safe for pregnant women, children, cancer and diabetic patients alike. I was impressed by how I got my own disposable towel and every customer gets to take home a travel friendly nail care set when one leaves the shop.

I was curious why they called themselves the “HONEST NAIL SPA” and according to Zi, she shared that..

Unlike many nail salons they will educate their customers on all the products that they use but more importantly, they will let you, the customer make your own informed decisions about what you want to do with your nails – so there’s no hard-selling of nail packages to you or anything along that line. Best of all, everything at the nail spa is vegan friendly, plus they have treatments and products catered for vegans, pregnant mums, and even kids too!

AUUM also upholds a strict hygiene standards where they only use disposable towels, nail files, foot files, and toe separators. All the other tools are disinfected and cured under UV light. One of the main goals of AUUM,  fueled out of passion – is to change the nail industry’s standards by offering the best services and products that the shop can find and educate customers on the harmful effects of normal nail lacquers and other options they can choose! I LOVE this part of the service:)

IMG_7370 IMG_7367

I was really excited to try the Auum’s sigature service where they provide soak x shape x trim cuticle x callus removal x treatment x scrub x massage x polish! It cost $38 for signature manicure and $58 for signature pedicure. The process was fuss free and was meticulously carried out with strict sanitary measures and great smile from Jasmine the staff who served me. It such a pampering experience I fell asleep half way through.

I went for a bright coral pedicure and decided to try the one and only non-toxic vegan bio sculpture gel manicure! It was just like any gel nail service but had a full range of colours to choose from. I was spoilt for choice and decided to go for a glittery number. If you are not a fan of nail polish in general, they also provide nail wrap services which is so easy to put on and instantly you get gorgeous nails on the go. I tried a half-moon red nail with white tip nail wrap and voila, within a couple of minutes and just a simple top coat, my nails looked just as good as any painted nails. I got many compliments when I was in NYC over the past week and everyone could not believe they were nail wraps! The nail wrap service is an additional top up of $40 on top of the basic nail care services they provide.

Our First Beauty Giveaway: Original Sprout Body Care from Pout.com

A couple of weeks back, Ivena from pout.com sent us some beauty products from Original Sprout, a 100% vegan hair and body series. We decided to take the products to the test and used it for two weeks. Here are the prices of the range we tried: Leave-in Conditioner $18.50, Hair and Body Babywash(our favourite!!!) $16.50 and Natural Shampoo $16. Previously, we often use vegan hair products bought from iherb and most of them have no smell and some gave us dry, rough hair. We have been trying so many different brands and we are thrilled to say that not only does original sprout products smell really good (like perfume!), they were moisturizing. Someone even asked me how did I get such healthy hair a few days back:)

We did a Q&A with Ivena and found out more information about her company and the reasons why she brought original sprouts to Singapore.

1. How did Pout come about?

We started pout as a children cum family salon in mid 2011. The market lacked salon appropriate products for this segment so we started searching the web for good products to bring in. We found 2 brands backed by strong reviews that we loved and got them into Singapore exclusively for our salon, one of the brands being Original Sprout. The salon did not do very well, but the products were popular, so in mid 2012, we sold the salon and decided to bring the products out to the larger Singapore market. We now retail Original Sprout at selected shops, as well as on http://www.pout.com.sg

2. Who created Original Sprout and where is it from?

Original Sprout was founded by Inga, a master stylist (which means a technician who has done a minimum of 20,000 haircuts), and the inspiration behind it, was the birth of her daughter, Maya. She wanted the safest and most natural baby shampoo on her daughter. Sadly, all the shampoos she got wreaked havoc to her daughter’s hair and sensitive skin. To remedy the problem, Inga created the first of its kind, ultra moisturizing natural baby bath and styling products. The benefits of being a master stylist with professional experience and being a mother with real life experience culminated into Original Sprouts, a globally trusted natural family brand. Here are some interesting facts about the products!

-Original Sprout products are “worry-free luxury”:

– Gold standard in consumer protection (European Union and Prop65, California’s Safe Cosmetics Act compliant)

– No natural or synthetic ingredients linked with estrogen and hormone disruption, cancer and autism

– Free of Phytoestrogens, Soy, Parabens, Gluten, Dixoanes from Sulphates, Phthalates and Formaldehyde

– Biodegradable and 100% Vegetarian and Vegan (Original Sprout is admantly against animal testing and supports Peta in the ethical treatment of animals. All products are vegan, and lanolin, used in the Hair Styling Balm, is from wool and the sheeps are not harmed)- Ivena wanted to highlight this because some vegans disagree with using wool.

– Free of insect attractors such as honey and soda fragrances

– Eco-friendly and environmentally responsible, eg recyclable packaging, easy-rinse products for least water usuage, bio-diesel used in company cars.

– Trusted and recommended by celebrities and their stylists such as Angeline Jolie, Cindy Crawford and Brooke Shields

-Used on the sets of Hollywood movies (e.g. Glee, Pirates of the Caribbean, CSI, Hawaii Five O etc

3. Are there any scent in the products?

Yes, there is a natural, pleasant scent, and this scent is similar across most variants in the range.

4. Is there a best selling product that everyone swears by?

Our bestseller is the Hair & Body Babywash. Although called “Babywash”, it is a family product so everyone can use it. In some American hospitals, this product is used for newborn’s first wash. It is gently and very moisturising and helps wash away skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, heat rash and even cradle crap. You can even create a bubble bath with it too.

5. Do you guys offer gift wrapping if customers buy online and what is the packaging like?

Most customers currently buy products for their own use, so even if they purchase the gift sets, they ask us to do away with the gift wrapping. Nevertheless, when we receive orders for gift sets, we continue to ask customers if they wish to have their items gift wrapped.

Here are some new features on their website:

a) Change in shipping terms

– Free shipping on everything with no minimum order, plus

– One free 1.25oz family travel pack for every $50 purchased (choice of 5 variants). The 1.25oz packs retail for $5 so this is equivalent to 10%

b) “pout” branded packaging- plain brown box with a colourful “pout” sticker across the box (This can be seen on the picture above when we received our box!)

6. What will be the next product you guys are looking to add in your web store?

We are looking to launch a new brand of hair care targetting trend-savvy teens and young adults. This range has a very different positioning from our current brands- eye catching graphics, quirky product names and playful descriptions.

IDOCARE: Singapore’s First Eco & No Animal Testing Laundry powder & Dishwashing liquid

A couple of months back when I was at Pasar Bella at the Grand Stand buying vegan toothpaste we got a sample of IDOCARE products from the counter and was shocked to find out they were created in Singapore! We decided to give it a try and it was really as good as any other products we have used. We decided to email Humaa, the boss of IDOCARE and we got an exclusive interview with her.

Here are the prices for the products at IDOCARE:

5x Concentrated Dishwashing Liquid $6.95 (5x the amount)

Concentrated Laundry Detergent $12 for 1 kg

Concentrated Floor Cleaner $11 for 1 litre

Hi Humaa, Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer the questions below! She just gave birth to her second child and we really appreciate her giving a heart felt sharing about how she started and some common misconception about good cleaners in the household industry!

1. What is the story behind idocare?

I decided to quit my job when my first child was born. Since she was “pure”, I wanted to expose her to as little harmful stuff as I could. I ensured all I exposed her to was as safe as possible. Having only 1 income, I realized being “non-toxic” was really expensive. So I decided to embark on a journey to create stuff for mum’s (just like myself) who want the best for their child but do not want to pay an arm and leg for it. And so IDOCARE was born.

2. Could you tell us more about yourself?

I am now 36 years old. Quite out spoken and love my independence. My teachers always pegged me as an entrepreneur. And I suppose they were right afterall. I started out in life trying to be an interlectual property lawyer (LOL), but that failed completely as I just did not have my heart in it. Eventually, I went into advertising and absolutely loved it. But soon after the birth of my firstchild, I had to leave beacuse I did not trust anyone looking after her. A wife and now a mother of two, I am learning lots about parenthood and business together:) I consider myself to be quite “out of the box” in my thinking and I have always wanted to do something to contribute to the world and IDOCARE is it!

3. Is it a Singapore registered company or a foreign company? Are the products made in Singapore as well?

IDOCARE is a local brand. It was born here. It is owned by my company “RATHOR HOLDINGS PTE LTD”. We manufacture our products in Malaysia to keep our costs lower. If we were to manufacture here, I would never be able to sell at the prices we are selling right now.

4. Could you share any secret or special ingredients used in your products that you want more people to know of?

Optical brighteners: They are found in many laundry detergents. They make your clothes look brighter and whiter and make your colours last. But it is just a layer of “chemical” that sits on top of your clothing. And it creates many skin problems. The most common being eczema. Our laundry detergent does not have this at all.

It is a common misconception that “bubbles” clean better. Again, that is a chemical that has been added into products to make you feel they are cleaning better. But it is not. We do not contain this chemical. Thus our powder is a low sud powder, which is better for you and better for the environment. And we clean very well!

People also feel liquid detergent cleans better than powder. Again this is wrong. Actually powders are able to get in between your fibers and in fact, powders (especially ours) clean better because the powder is so fine that is get in between.

5. We read that you can wash vegetables with your dishwashing liquid. That sounds pretty crazy and how safe is this technique?

It is safe because we are asking you to use very little dishwashing liquid. You need to follow our instructions on the bottle. It only applies to product that is not organic. We help to clean out all the pesticides so you must wash it thoroughly. We have a customer who blogged about how she eats blueberries. Before IDOCARE, she just used to wash them with water. After trying us out, she realizes that the colour of the blueberries actually changes after being washed because they are covered in wax and pesticide. Try it!

6. What are some challenges you faced creating the products and the obstacles you have gone through?

As we are really really new. Not many retailers want to give us a try. They say no one will buy us because no one has heard of us. This is really disheartening. But I do try as hard as possible and we have been lucky (sort of) that eventually after lots of pestering, they do give us a try and the customers do like us and continually want to buy our products.

Margins. Everyone is out to get big margins but due to our philosophy, we have found it very challenging to get our products into stores which require high margins. As it defeats the prupose of starting this brand in the first place. We will struggle with this but we will not give up.

Once I was told by a store that they did not want to stock anything other than the one brand they had in their store. I asked them, “Don’t you want to offer your customers a choice of cleaning products?” and they said a flat “NO”!

I have no real background in anything that I sell. From creation of the product to the manufacture to the sale. I have paid the price many times. I have had stock that has to be thrown away. I have had to pay for things that should not cost as much as I was charged. I am still learning many lessons. But I hope that one day, all my hard work and money will all pay off. When IDOCARE becomes recognised and loved by everyone!

7. Do you have any plans for new products in the future? Could you give us a hint?

To take over the world:D

I honestly hope that every household in the world of ASIA(for now) has at least 1 IDOCARE product in their house and uses it! I do plan to create more products and in the pipeline is an all purpose spray (great for high chairs and table tops). We are thinking of a bathroom cleaner(because bathrooms are really quite a dirty place and need their own set of products) and maybe even a hand sanitiser (lots of people are asking for this!)

I just need a bit more time to formulate and test it as I have needed to slow down a little recently (thanks to our latest edition to the family) but I will eventually get there.

8. Could you share any inside news about the household produce industry you found shocking and think everyone should learn about?

Hmmmm…There are really lots of things out there that you do not really need. Some products are created just to get a larger share of your wallet. I try to do the opposite by creating one product with multi functions and save you money and space (we need that in Singapore)! Take our dishwashing for example, great for kids bottles, mum’s breast pump and your dirty dishes and even cleans your stove. You do not need to have 2 or 3 different cleaners on your sink! Just 1:)

Overall, we love the smell of the products as they are really light with a touch of lemon. We think this makes a great gift for any new mothers too!

Vegan Popcorn Lip Scrub that can be be eaten- LUSH Cosmetics at Wisma Atria

Many friends started asking us where LUSH was and wanting to try their products after the last few posts. We hope more people will start getting animal-free testing products. This is one of the worst industry as they use rabbits, mouse, rats, cats, dogs, monkeys (you name it they have tried it on so many of them). Imagine your own pet going through the torture when their bodies are shaped so differently from ours:(

Anyway on a brighter note, I found a really lightweight and easy product that has a 2 in 1 function! The BUBBLY lipsticks $30 (50% off now at $15) works as a natural lip balm and as a blusher after some smudging. Look at how natural the blush looks on my skin. This product is super similar to the super famous Benefit lip tint that everyone is raving about. I read through the reviews and tried dotting 3 drops on my lips and on my cheeks. The effect was really gentle and natural. This is perfect for days when I want to go without makeup and just want a natural glow on my face. I tried it yesterday and my blush stayed on for the whole day even after a day’s of work in the sun! That never happened when I was using blush powder.

The next product I used before applying the Bubbly lipstick was POPCORN lip scrub $20. Alicia the store manager told me that people just walked straight in the shop to purchase this and leave. This is their number 1 best seller in the shop. I can see why because you can eat the scrub and it taste seriously good. There are 3 flavours to choose from. The chocolate flavour (30% off now), Bubblegum (best seller but very sweet) and Popcorn which has a sweet and salty taste.

This is the perfect scrub for me as I hate scrubbing my whole body and my lips are often cracked and dry. Using this lip scrub takes less than a few minutes including eating them up as well. I can imagine myself waking up daily just to give my lips some scrub and starting each day with a touch of popcorn sounds really fun.

A few instagram friends have commented how they loved LUSH products but find them costly. I find this really shocking because I spent $100 on 6 items which equates to $16 for each which is considered really cheap in the cosmetic/beauty industry. The prices are almost similar or cheaper than Loreal or Maybelline sold in Watsons or Guardian. (Do not get me started on the beauty counters in departmental stores selling creams for less than 100ml for more than $500 a pot?) They have a 30-50% sale going on right now and I am so thrilled that I am supporting a company that believes in all things natural. Coming from a business point of view, it is so difficult to be special or different from the others as finding a supplier that fits the vision you believe in is already a huge challenge.

The Truth about Animal Testing in our daily lives

Looking at these images tears us up, imagine how they must be feeling? We often hear stories of abused pigs, cows, chickens, sheeps and so many more animals we consume daily but we often forget the ones trapped in the laboratories. The media and the beauty chains have brainwashed stories of how awesome their new anti aging cream works or how the latest lip gloss is the only accessory to have. To detergent companies telling us how clean and neat our sheets will be if we use their newly improved formula.

The research are usually conducted inside universities, medical schools, pharmaceutical companies, farms, defense establishments and commercial facilities that provide animal testing services to industry. It includes pure research such as genetics, development biology, behavioral studies, as well as applied research such as biomedical research, xenotransplantation, drug testing and toxicology tests, including cosmetics testing. But what goes behind the laboratories of creating these items remains hidden from all of us.

The following video is super heart aching and do not say we did not warn you to bring out your tissue paper and cry out loud at the amount of pain and torture these little friends of ours are doing. Worse part, our favourite pets like dogs, cats and rabbits are often used and mistreated like garbage.

I found some research and statistics online regarding animal testing. We are determined to not be a part of this and we want to fight this crazy world we live in by supporting companies that believes and preach the NO animal testing policy. All it takes is our demand for products with assurance and faith that no animals were used in any process. It is a chicken and egg issue. When there is a demand there will be a supply. We have already made our first step and we are sticking to it. Sadly, there is one side of this we find it hard to swallow and we pray for a miracle to change one day soon. At this very moment, there is the law that all medical drugs are to be tested on animals. 😦

The top 10 discoveries taken from a few websites found online. We like this particular link a lot as it gives us a thorough break down of where the animals come from, where do they go after testing to how animals are treated in the laboratories.

1. Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned and abused in U.S. labels every year (What about others around the world?!)

2. The two most common illnesses in the Western world  (and we say around the World) are Lung cancer from smoking and heart disease. Neither can be reproduced in lab animals.

3. Labs that use mice, rats, birds, reptiles and amphibians are exempted from the minimal protection under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Wow that’s seriously racist!

4. Even animals that are protected under the AWA can be abused and tortured. And the law does not require the use of valid alternatives to animals, even if they are available.

5. According to the Humane Society, registration of a single pesticide requires more than 50 experiments and the use of as many as 12,000 animals.

6. Several cosmetic test commonly performed on mice, rats, rabbits and guinea pigs include:

– skin and eye irritation where chemicals are rubbed on shaved skin or dripped into the eyes without any pain relief.

– repeated force-feeding studies that last weeks or months, to look for signs of general illness or specific health hazards.

– widely condemned “lethal dose” tests, where animals are forced to swallow large amounts of a test chemical to determine what does causes death.

7. In tests of potential carcinogens, subjects are given a substance every day for two years. Other tests involve killing pregnant animals and testing their fetuses.

8. The real life applications for some of the test substances are as trivial as an “improved” laundry detergent, new eye shadow, or copycat drug to replace a profitable pharmaceutical whose patent expired.

9. Major cosmetic brands are failing to inform customers that their products are tested on animals in China for them to enter the biggest market in the world and most brands have already done so by keeping things hush.

10. 92% of drugs passed by animal test immediately fail when first tried on humans because they are useless, dangerous or both.

On the other side of the coin, there are sites like Understanding Animal Research which answers commonly asked questions about animal research and its reasons. If  we were not the ones who treated the animals with care during the research then we rather play it safe and support one that uses organic, natural and animal free products as we are all a part of this earth we live in.

Extra information about Toothy Tabs:

These tables are not only great for their compact nature, they are also based with great ingredients of sodium bicarbonate and kaolin meaning they are very gentle on your dental cavity (posh, ey!), sodium bicarbonate has also proven to be an effective and gentle teeth whitening remedy.

Many people question the fact that there is no fluoride in toothy tabs, however fluoride is an existing substance in most tap water areas, particularly within the UK and in Singapore too.

The tablets are packed full of wholesome essential oils and come in an array of titles, each having tailored made scents with whimsical sounding ingredients from wasabi, to rise, to traditional spearmint. There are 40 tablets in each packet!

Toothy tabs are great as gifts for friends and family who travel frequently, the eco-friendly, everyday home use or just the big kids at heart! We cannot wait to pack this for our upcoming trips as this is so light in comparison to the heavy fat plastic toothpaste tubes.
