Rendang Curry Sandwich- Chef Icon Natural Bakery at Kampong Bahru Road

I have been planning for a return to Chef Icon bakery shop  for their yummy homemade breads for a while. I was thrilled when my work ended around the area today and I decided to get a rendang curry mushroom sandwich $8.80 with a cup of tea. Chef Francis told me that they shred each mushroom to thin slices to resemble rendang lamb texture and made a stew out of it. The taste was flavourful, not too rich and had just the right amount of filling in the sandwich.

The most common issue I have with sandwiches are the overflowing fillings which causes the bread to be really soggy towards the end of the meal. Every bite was crunchy, yummy and filled with natural goodness. It was a delightful tea snack but if you are very hungry this portion can be too small for a full meal. Hubby Ro joined me later on and thought the sandwich was really unique and tasty. We will definitely be back to try more sandwiches and we heard from Chef Francis they will be serving ciabatta and focaccia bread end of june. We cannot wait:)

Homemade Blueberry Jam- Chef Icon Nature Bakery at Kampong Bahru Road

I often drive past Chef Icon Bakery shop if I’m near my dad’s office. They are opposite Singapore General Hospital where the bus interchange sits. After googling I found out that they are a healthy bakery shop famous for their decadence chocolate Trovana and New York cheesecake which are suitable for vegetarians. I decided to pop by one afternoon for tea and was surprised they served one of the yummiest blueberry homemade jams I’ve ever tasted!

Initially I was hoping to try one of their cakes but the owner, Francis told me eggs and milk are used in them. He went on to recommend their signature club sandwiches on artisan breads which are vegan friendly. He told me to try their rendang curry mushroom, italiano pesto or yanikiku style mushroom but I wanted to save my stomach for dinner with my mum. I went instead for Toasties and had their chef’s signature rustic bread (1 entire loaf) with home made blue berry $4.90. They also offer kaya (not vegan) and peanut butter.

When my toasted bread with jam arrived, it was so crunchy. I was thrilled to see nuts and cranberries on them as they are the perfect companion to any good old bread. The jam was not too sweet and I could taste and burst some berries in between. I felt like I was on a holiday in this quaint little shop with a few seats while sipping my hot tea.

The classic french “After Rain Guava” tea was superb. You can smell the fruit as you sip it and it’s not harsh on your palette and very soothing. Sadly, they do not provide any re-fill.

As I happily ate my toast, I saw many people popping in to buy their bread and pick up their cake orders. Hopefully someday soon, they can offer vegan friendly cakes too!

After chatting and tasting such good food, I found out that they use Avina.Neutro Baking style, which makes their products healthier.

Their products contain:

  • No Animal Rennet
  • No Animal Gelatin
  • No Animal Meat
  • No Liquor
  • No Margarine
  • No MSG
  • No Onions & Garlic
  • No Preservatives
  • No Chemical Bread Improvers

They have such a wide range of artisan breads on sale and the taste and texture reminds me of those bakery hopping days in Paris. Such a charming shop run by a guy with such good ethics to serve quality and wholesome good food in a world dominated by preservatives and artificial flavourings.
